— July through May · All Year Long

Life in the Band.

From the first day of summer camp to the final bow at the last band concert, being part of the Bobcat Band is a year-round commitment and a year-round privilege.

Summer Band Camp — July 2025

July

Summer Band Camp.

Every season begins the same way students reporting to the practice field in late July, music in hand, before the school year has officially started. Two weeks of morning-to-evening rehearsal turn a collection of individuals into a single, unified ensemble.

Fundamentals come first: posture, instrument carriage, step technique, and interval alignment. By the end of week two, the show has its shape. The final Friday is Parent Preview Night. The first time families see what two weeks of hard work look like from the stands.

Camp is physically demanding and emotionally bonding. Students who come in as strangers leave as bandmates. It is, by nearly every account, the week that defines the season.

●  August – November

Friday Night Game Day.

Game day begins long before kickoff. By early afternoon, the band room is alive with warmup runs and section checks. Students arrive in uniform black pants, tall plume, and every button in line, and the energy builds from the march to the stadium through until the end of the game with the Alma Mater.

The halftime show is six minutes of precision: students moving in perfect intervals, playing from memory, and performing a show they have rehearsed for months. For the students, it is the fulfillment of every early morning and late practice. For the crowd, it is the signature moment of every home game at Bobcat Stadium.

Away games mean buses and camaraderie. The band travels to support the team and to remind every opponent’s crowd that the Bobcats travel loud.

●  September – October

Competition Season.

Competitions across September and October place the Bobcat Band against programs from across Tennessee. Each contest judges the ensemble on music performance, visual performance, and general effect, the intangible quality that makes a show worth watching twice.

The competitive season demands a different kind of focus. Drill sets are cleaned to individual steps. Intonation is tuned chord by chord. Every entrance, every release, every transition is rehearsed until the ensemble can perform with confidence regardless of conditions, crowd noise, or nerves.

Win or place, every competition is a lesson in performance under pressure and in the graceful acceptance of a judge’s critique. The students who compete learn more about music and themselves in one afternoon than in months of classroom study.

●  December – May

Concert & Winter Season.

When the last competition score is posted, the Bobcat Band doesn’t stop. It transforms. Instruments change, repertoire deepens, and the ensemble shifts from the precision of the field to the intimacy of the concert hall. December marks the start of the Concert Band season, a six-month program running through ETSBOA festival season and culminating in the annual May concert.

January also begins Winter Guard, a separate competitive ensemble for flag, rifle, and saber performers who compete in the Tennessee circuit. The guard season demands athletic skill, artistic expression, and the kind of precision that only full-season training produces.

Together, the concert season ensures that every Bobcat Band student performs in a formal, seated concert setting reading complex literature, developing sensitive musicianship, and experiencing the full breadth of what it means to be a musician.
